I like to think of the road to creative revival as the various stages of a roller-coaster ride… if it’s your greatest fear. Try to put yourself in their shoes for a hot minute:
Cautious by nature, you're someone who has a morbid fascination with theme park rides but are terrified of ever setting foot on one. Except one day you wake up with a newfound determination, shake off your better judgement and make the decision to take the plunge. You settle into the bucket seat and secure your harness, confident that you’re in control of your destiny. As you wait for the ride to begin, you pepper yourself with reassurances. You’ll be fine as long as you don’t lose your head.
The passenger cars jolt out of the docking bay and clatter up the steep incline of the first hill. You begin to panic, a pang of regret filling your stomach as you shake your head and chide yourself for being so foolhardy. You look around to see if it’s possible to abort the ride except the world has grown distant. You squeeze the handlebar as the car crests the mountain and say a final prayer.
The car plummets into the depths, a wave of emotions washing over you, pulling you this way and that. You shut your eyes tight. Fear, exhilaration, regret and childish glee fill your mind all at once as the ride enters a series of chaotic turns, turning you upside down and all around.
Surprisingly you find yourself opening your eyes as the ride enters its climax. Suddenly it becomes clear. This chaos is all part of the process. You begin to smile and even fling your hands into the air as you enter the final spin. The ride comes to a close, docking back at the starting line as you find yourself grinning from ear to ear. You’ve accomplished something that has terrified you for most of your life and you’ll never be the same again.
The truth is any genuine growth comes from scaring yourself and facing your innermost fears. If you’re brave enough to take the plunge you can learn to smile in the face of adversity and with time and practice, you’ll come to embrace the thrills of the ride.
