Make It A (Fun)tory Time

On a recent weekend walk I got to chewing over some upcoming afternoon plans with friends, excited at the prospect of enjoying some yummy vino in good company. In an instant, my daydreaming brought about a curious idea on two types of imbibers; those who drink to enjoy and conversely those that enjoy to drink

As I see it, the first group drinks to forget the present moment while the latter drinks to relish it.

For most of my adult life, I stoically sat in the former camp, knocking back a glass or three to wash away the pains of the day. For years I leaned on beer, wine and spirits to drown out the noise in search of some imagined happy place. It was a coping mechanism. A way to deal with the things I didn’t have the guts to face.

As I’ve worked on myself, exorcising my demons through proactive introspection, I’ve come to experience a more layered reality. I no longer lean on a sundowner as a protective clutch but a way to capture and augment any given moment. For when we have the courage to look within, our favourite drop becomes a unique gift, a celebration of choices made for the right reasons.
